The leveling machine is a key auxiliary unit in an ERW tube mill line, typically positioned between the uncoiler and the shear or forming section. Its primary function is to eliminate coil defects such as waviness, edge buckling, and residual stress after uncoiling, ensuring the strip steel is flat and stress-balanced for stable forming and welding.

    • Stress Relief and Flatness Correction: Multiple staggered upper and lower leveling rolls apply alternating bending force to plastically deform the strip and eliminate residual stress.

    • Improved Plate Shape: Enhances flatness of the strip surface, ensuring proper alignment and forming precision in the downstream process.

    • Stable Strip Feeding: Operates in sync with the entire production line, ensuring smooth and continuous feeding of the material.


    3. Machine Structure

    • Leveling Roll System: Composed of multiple high-strength alloy steel rolls that are heat-treated and precisely machined for high wear resistance and rigidity.

    • Backup Roll and Frame: Backup rolls support the leveling rolls to prevent deflection, ensuring long-term stability.

    • Adjustment System: Manual, electric, or hydraulic gap adjustment systems to accommodate various strip thicknesses and material grades.

    • Drive System: Powered by motor and gearbox for smooth transmission and sufficient torque.

    • Entry & Exit Guides: Ensure smooth strip entry and exit, preventing scratches or misalignment.

    5. Application Note

    After uncoiling, the strip often exhibits defects such as edge waves, center buckles, or internal stress. These will negatively affect forming accuracy, weld seam alignment, and even weld integrity. The leveling machine provides continuous high-precision correction, ensuring the strip enters the forming section with optimal flatness and uniformity, thus playing a crucial role in consistent and high-quality pipe production.

What is a leveler? What role does it play in a welded pipe production line?

A leveler is a device that initially straightens and flattens steel strips. It is mainly used to remove defects such as waves and warping of raw material steel coils. In a straight seam welded pipe production line, the leveler is located after the uncoiler, which can ensure the flatness of the strip before entering the forming machine, thereby improving the weld quality and forming stability.

Are levelers and Flattener the same thing?

The industry generally believes that "Flattener" and "levelers" can be used interchangeably, and both can be called flatteners or levelers in English.

Must all straight seam welded pipe equipment be equipped with a leveler?

Not necessarily. If the raw material quality is high and the steel coil is thin or moderately tight, some customers may not configure a leveler. However, it is recommended to use it in the following cases: the material thickness is large (such as >3mm); the steel coil has obvious waves or side bends; the appearance of the welded pipe or the quality of the weld is high.
