Product Description

A Friction Saw is a high-speed cutting machine used in ERW tube mills to cut continuously produced steel pipes and tubes into fixed lengths without stopping the production line.

Unlike traditional cutting methods, a friction saw uses a high-speed rotating steel blade. The blade generates intense friction and heat when contacting the pipe, allowing it to quickly cut carbon steel tubes at high production speeds.

Because of its simple structure, fast cutting speed, and low investment cost, the friction saw is still widely used in many tube manufacturing plants around the world.

Where Is the Friction Saw Used?

A friction saw is installed after the sizing section and before the run-out table or stacking system.

Typical ERW Tube Mill Process:

Coil Loading → Uncoiler → Forming → HF Welder → Sizing → Friction Saw → Run-out Table → Packing

Its main function is to:

  • ✂️ Cut continuously produced tubes into preset lengths
  • ⚡ Keep up with high-speed tube production
  • 📏 Ensure consistent pipe length
  • 🏭 Improve production efficiency
    • friction saw
    • Hot Cutting Friction Saw

    • Friction Saw has burrs

How Does a Friction Saw Work? ⚙️

The friction saw uses a thin alloy steel blade rotating at very high speed.

During operation:

  1. The flying saw carriage synchronizes with the moving tube.
  2. The friction saw blade rotates at high speed.
  3. Friction between the blade and the steel pipe generates heat.
  4. The heated material is rapidly separated while the blade completes the cut.
  5. The carriage returns to its starting position and prepares for the next cutting cycle.

Because cutting mainly relies on frictional heat and high-speed abrasion, the blade does not require carbide teeth like a cold saw.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose a Friction Saw if:

✅ Production cost is your priority.

✅ Small burrs are acceptable.

✅ You produce standard carbon steel pipes.

✅ You want a reliable and economical cutting solution.

Choose a Cold Saw if:

✅ Customers require burr-free pipe ends.

✅ High cutting precision is required.

✅ Pipe ends will be used directly for welding or assembly.

✅ Premium product quality is more important than initial equipment cost.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1. Is a friction saw suitable for stainless steel tubes?

It is mainly used for carbon steel ERW tubes. For applications requiring higher cutting quality or special materials, a cold saw is often a better choice.

Q2. Does a friction saw produce burrs?

Yes. Because it cuts by high-speed friction, some burrs and heat discoloration may appear on the pipe ends. If burr-free cutting is required, a cold saw is recommended.

Q3. Can the cutting length be adjusted?

Yes. The cutting length is programmed through the PLC control system and can be adjusted according to production requirements.

Q4. How long does a friction saw blade last?

Blade life depends on tube material, wall thickness, cutting speed, and maintenance. Proper operating parameters and regular blade replacement help maintain stable cutting performance.
