What Is an Induction Coil?

The Induction Coil is one of the most important components in the High Frequency (HF) Welding System of an ERW Tube Mill. It is installed directly before the weld point and works together with the HF Welder and Impeder to generate a concentrated high-frequency electromagnetic field.

Its primary function is to transfer high-frequency electrical energy to the open tube edges without physical contact, heating both strip edges to the welding temperature for a strong and continuous forge weld.

Without a properly designed induction coil, stable high-speed welding and consistent weld quality cannot be achieved.

πŸ“ Where Is the Induction Coil Installed?

The induction coil is located in the welding section of the tube mill production line.

Typical Process Flow:

➑️ Uncoiler β†’ Shear & Welder β†’ Accumulator β†’ Forming Section β†’ HF Induction Coil β†’ Squeeze Rolls β†’ External Burr Scarfing β†’ Cooling β†’ Sizing β†’ Flying Saw β†’ Run-out Table

The induction coil surrounds the formed tube just before the squeeze rolls.

βš™οΈ How Does an Induction Coil Work?

During production, the HF welder supplies high-frequency current to the induction coil.

The alternating electromagnetic field generated by the coil induces current in the steel strip edges. Due to the skin effect and proximity effect, the induced current is concentrated at the two strip edges, rapidly heating them to welding temperature.

The squeeze rolls then apply pressure to forge the heated edges into a solid-state weld.

The Impeder, positioned inside the tube, further concentrates the current along the strip edges, greatly improving welding efficiency while reducing energy loss.

πŸ’‘ Common Causes of Coil Failure

Like other welding consumables, induction coils require regular inspection.

Common issues include:

  • Water leakage
  • Copper tube deformation
  • Insulation damage
  • Coil overheating
  • Improper spacing to the tube
  • Mechanical collision during production

Routine maintenance helps extend service life and maintain stable welding quality.

❓Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Is the induction coil a consumable part?

Yes. Although it has a long service life, it will gradually wear due to heat, cooling cycles, and continuous production. Regular inspection is recommended.

Q2: Can one induction coil fit every tube size?

No. Different tube diameters and welding conditions require different coil dimensions and designs for optimal efficiency.

Q3: Does the induction coil directly touch the steel tube?

No. It heats the tube through electromagnetic induction without physical contact.

Q4: Why is water cooling necessary?

High-frequency current generates significant heat inside the copper coil. Continuous water cooling prevents overheating and ensures stable operation.
