What Is an Impeder?

An impeder is installed inside the tube, directly opposite the high-frequency induction coil.
Its main job is to reduce magnetic losses and force more current to concentrate on the strip edges, allowing faster and more efficient welding.

It is an essential part of:

  • ✅ERW tube mill welding section

  • ✅High-frequency induction welding

  • ✅Squeeze roll zone heating

    • What Is the Difference Between ferrite and Impeder in HF Welding
    • Ferrite Core Impeder Solutions

How the Impeder Works

Inside the impeder is a set of high-performance ferrite cores.
During induction welding:

  • Ferrite increases magnetic permeability

  • Limits current path

  • Directs energy toward the weld edges

  • Improves heating concentration

  • Reduces the power demand of the HF welder

This optimized magnetic control allows the tube mill to weld faster and maintain stable heat distribution.

Key Functions of an Impeder

1. Improve Welding Heat Efficiency

More heat goes to the strip edges, allowing cleaner and stronger welds.

2. Reduce Energy Consumption

A high-quality impeder can significantly lower HF power usage.

3. Stabilize Weld Seam Quality

Heat distribution becomes uniform, minimising internal defects and porosity.

4. Protect Internal Components

Most impeder designs use water cooling to avoid overheating and extend ferrite lifetime.

Common Types of Impeders

🔹Rod Impeder

The standard type used for most ERW steel pipes.

🔹Return-Flow Impeder

Specially designed for large-diameter pipes, offering improved cooling and stronger magnetic guidance.

🔹Ceramic High-Temperature Impeder

Ideal for stainless steel or heat-sensitive materials.

🔹Multi-Core High-Power Impeder

Used for thick-wall or heavy-duty applications.

Related Accessories and Components

• Ferrite Cores

The magnetic center of the impeder, responsible for current control.

• Impeder Casing

Protects the ferrite from damage and heat.

• Water Cooling Tube

Ensures efficient internal cooling during welding.

• Support Rod / Holder

Keeps the impeder in the correct position inside the tube.

• Induction Coil (Related Part)

Works together with the impeder to create the electromagnetic field needed for welding.

Why the Impeder Matters in ERW Tube Mills

Choosing the correct impeder directly affects:

  • Welding speed

  • Energy cost

  • Weld seam strength

  • Production stability

  • Equipment lifetime

A well-matched impeder ensures smooth welding performance and significantly improves overall production quality.
